Involving Young People in Decision Making

Youth Scotland offers several training options for groups that want to set up a youth board or forum, or ensure that their young people are more involved in decision making.

We encourage involving young people in decision making, supporting youth action and developing essential life skills for leadership. Youth participation forms the foundation blocks for Youth Scotland’s projects and programmes, and we encourage our members and partners to build strong involvement routes for young people at every level. The opportunities below can be delivered as an opportunity for young people and youth workers together, or as a training just for youth workers by our training team. For the second option, visit our training page to see what we have coming up.

Involving Young People in Decision Making

This is a 2 – 3 hour session introducing young people and youth workers to the basics of how to get involved in decision making, including training in good communication, and building the group’s confidence.

Bored Meetings

Bored Meetings is training for young people who are involved in different kinds of decision-making processes or groups, such as youth councils, youth forums, school councils, management committees and boards. The training builds on the session above to support young people to think about the different roles on a Youth Board, where their skills set, and the processes they want to use to make decisions.

Keep it Real

Keep It Real training takes a practical approach to youth participation and provides a selection of activities, tried and tested by young people, which can be used separately or together as part of a training programme. Activities are designed to build young people’s confidence, increase their involvement in decision making, suggest creative ways of sharing ideas and evaluate and recognise achievements.
