Health Issues in the Community

Health Issues in the Community (HIIC) is a course that helps people understand what affects their health and the health of their communities.  This short course will focus on the areas of inequality, equity and social justice.

This Health Issues in the Community short course will focus on the areas of inequality, equity and social justice over 4 sessions.

These key elements of the pack underpin the use of community development approaches in health. They explore the whole area of poverty and inequality and then begin to challenge attitudes and preconceptions in relation to equity and social justice.

 

Session 1 – Learning Outcomes

  • To create a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere and begin to develop a sense of group cohesion.
  • To explore the idea of relative poverty and its link with social justice.

Session 2 – Learning Outcomes

  • To introduce key aspects of the determinants of health: poverty, inequality and social class.

Session 3 – Learning Outcomes

  • To broaden understanding of different groups’ experience of inequality.
  • To introduce the idea of common causes and differences.

Session 4 – Learning Outcomes

  • To introduce the concept of equity in health.
