Girls On The Move

Girls on the Move is a project designed to increase physical activity levels among girls and young women in Scotland.

Mums on the Run

25 young mothers took part in the Jog Scotland Mums on the Run jogging and power walking project in Paisley.  The project not only aimed to increase the young women's fitness levels, but also encouraged them to set their own goals, and provided opportunities to meet other young mothers.

The young women met weekly for the 'Jogging Buddies' running or 'Buggy Fit' power walking sessions.  The Girls on the Move grant covered the cost of crèche facilities enabling the young women to take part in the sessions without their children.

Most of the women taking part said they had done little exercise or socialising since having their babies and enjoyed the opportunity to do both through Mums on the Run.

Many of the young women set themselves targets which included a Christmas Run through Paisley and the Glasgow 10k run.  The project leader saw a noticeable increase in confidence among the women as their fitness improved and as they got to know other members of the group.

The project succeeded in bringing young women in similar situations together, increasing the confidence, self esteem and fitness levels of participants, and encouraging participants to set and reach their own goals and  develop a more positive attitude towards exercise.

Several of the young women went on to complete JogScotland Leadership Courses and are now helping to lead the next Mums on the Run project.
