THE YOUTH SCOTLAND TRAINING CALENDAR

Youth Scotland offers a comprehensive calendar of training events for youth workers across Scotland. These courses either form part of the Youth Scotland Network local learning and training programmes, accompany Youth Scotland's key projects or provide more in-depth, professional development in key subject areas.

A Games Legacy for Scotland

The Scottish Government plans to create a lasting legacy from the Commonwealth Games in 2014 as well as the 2012 Olympics and other major sporting events. Youth Scotland is working with the Scottish Government to build effective partnerships with, and between young people to ensure they play their part in making decisions around the legacy. Planning a residential with your group?

Although spring and summer may now seem a long way off, it's never too early to start planning for your group's next residential trip... With this in mind, Youth Scotland have produced a residential information supplement to accompany the Autumn edition of Magnet. The supplement provides a guide to the basics for planning, organising and running a residential trip in Scotland. As well as key pointers and tips, it contains a comprehensive directory of residential and outdoor centres across the country.

Girls on the Move Moving Forward Award

Do you know, a young person who has progressed in leaps and bounds since participating in a Girls on the Move leadership course? Girls on the Move wants to celebrate its leaders, not just those who are naturally skilled in leadership but those who have been on the biggest journey since completing a leadership course.The Moving Forward Award will celebrate all applicants in a specially produced supplement and a Sports Leaders UK Award will be presented to the individual that has shown the most progression at the Girls on the Move National Training event in February 2010.

New Qualifications for Youth Work survey - LLUK wants your views

LLUK are currently looking at the development of useful qualifications for the Youth Work workforce and would like to hear from you. To register to give your views and take part in ongoing research, please go to http://tiny.cc/YWregisteryourinterest

LLUK is the sector skills council responsible for the professional development of staff working in the UK Lifelong Learning Sector (which includes Community Learning and Development and paid staff and volunteers). This work could potentially have an impact on all youth groups and organisations and we would encourage you to get involved and give your views.

Youth Scotland affiliated groups please note that the new affiliation year begins on the 1st November 2009. Your group's main contact will receive a new affiliation form in early October.

Training opportunities in Glasgow

Youth Scotland, in partnership with Glasgow City Council (EVIP), is running a programme of free training events for young people and workers working with young people in the City of Glasgow area.

This training is being delivered through funding received from the Scottish Government's Cashback for Communities fund.

The following training is being offered:

  • Dynamic Youth Awards and Youth Achievement Awards Induction Training
  • Bored Meetings training for workers
  • Bored Meetings training for young people

Practical Problems Sensible Solutions 2009 - a national training event for youth workers

There are still some places available at this year's PPSS training conference, at the Hilton Edinburgh Airport Hotel on 31st October - 1st November. For more information and to book, go to the PPSS section of the Youth Scotland website .

Youth Scotland AGM - 21st November, Edinburgh 

This year, Youth Scotland will be holding its Annual General Meeting on the 21st November at the Hilton Edinburgh Airport Hotel. Further details have been circulated to all affiliated groups in this month's newsletter mailing.  

 FUNDING NEWS  

See below for a selection of the latest funding opportunities:

People's Postcode Trust Funding : Funding of £500 - £10,000 for 3 month projects.

Barcapel Foundation awards for health, heritage and youth: Foundation awarding grants predominantly to charities operating in Scotland. Supports all areas of development for young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

UnLtd Sport Relief Awards: Individuals or groups can apply for awards of between £250 and £10,000 for projects using sport and recreation to bring people together in communities.

Cashback for Communities: Grants of up to £10,000 for local youth projects. Administered by YouthLink Scotland. Closing date is 31st October.

Voluntary Action Community Chest: Grants of up to £1,000 for smaller community groups and free training to groups with an annual income of under £25,000.

Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards: Grants now open for elderly people and adults and children with disabilities. Community and voluntary groups can apply for grants of between £500 and £4,000.

Women's Fund for Scotland: Grants of up to £5,000 for International Women's Day events or for projects that benefit women aged 16 or over run by not-for-profit groups.

Young Scot Arts Action Fund: Grants of up to £200 for individuals and £750 for groups to fund creative talents.

Charity Technology Exchange: Organisations registered as charities can apply for product donations from companies such as Microsoft, Symantec and Cisco. Admin fees apply.

Big Lottery Secret Millionaire Fund: The Big Lottery Fund, in partnership with Channel 4, has funding for community projects. Applicants can apply directly or nominate a local group. 

The Prince's Trust Community Cash Awards: Funding for individuals to set up a project to benefit the community.

The Princes Trust Development Awards: Grants to help young people get into education, training or employment.

Awards for All Scotland: Grants of up to £10,000 for local community based projects. 

2014 Communities : Big Lottery Fund grants of up to £1,000 for local sports clubs, voluntary and community groups, community councils and schools.

Investing in Ideas: Grants of £500 to £10,000 for ideas that could benefit the local community.

ASH Scotland encourage young people to get involved in the debate about current tobacco bill

ASH Scotland is currently embarking on an initiave to involve young people in the debate about proposals set out in the Scottish Government's current tobacco bill. ASH Scotland is keen for young people to have the opportunity to participate and engage with legislation that could affect them.

The initiative includes a dedicated youth campaign web page with resources for young people, at www.ashscotland.org.uk/ash/7385.html    

The bill will be discussed in parliament this year, so ASH Scotland is urging groups to encourage young people to get involved and share their views as soon as possible.

Survey for groups involved in stopping smoking or smoking cessation projects

In addition, NHS Health Scotland and PATH (Partnership Action on Tobacco and Health) are currently conducting a survey to identify current activity services and projects that aim to discourage the uptake of smoking and/or encourage young people to stop. A small number of these identified projects will be offered the opportunity to have evaulation support to identify the effectiveness of their work. Go straight to the survey.

Sounds Right competition for young bands and musicians

Young Scot, in partnership with the Scottish Government and Scotland's Commissioner for Children and Young People (SCCYP) are organising a competition for young people to  perform alongside a big name established act at Edinburgh's Corn Exchange. If you know any young people with stars in their eyes, please encourage them to visit www.youngscotsoundsright.org and enter!

International Youth for Fair Trade Conference

This conference, taking place in Coventry University on Fri 30th October - Sunday 1st November is open to anyone aged 18 - 25 who is interested in making a difference in the world through Fair Trade. The programme involves speakers, workshops and presentations, Fair Trade films, a panel debate and a social event. A special price of £16.10 per delegate for the weekend is available if booked before 16th October.

HPV cervical cancer campaign - updated site and new SMS reminder service for girls and young women

NHS Health Scotland has recently updated its HPV immunisation campaign site with new features for year 2 of the immunisation programme. The site includes an educational DVD and a video of a real life story of a young woman's experience of receiving the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine. There is also info on the site about a new SMSreminder service for girls and young women.

British Heart Foundation posters available

The new British Heart Foundation (BHF) '60 minutes a day' posters are available to anyone who works with children and young people to help them increase awareness of the amount and types of physical activity young people need to do each day to stay healthy. They are available as a set of two A1 sized posters for over 11's and one A2 sized poster for under 11's. Ultimate Dodgeball - raise money for your group AND the British Heart Foundation

As part of British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland’s Food4Thought campaign this year, schools and youth groups can sign up for an exciting new fundraising event - Ultimate Dodgeball – aimed at getting children more active throughout the country.

Ultimate Dodgeball is open to young people aged 7 – 16 years old. All groups that register for Ultimate Dodgeball will receive a free organiser’s kit containing resources worth £30 (this includes three balls; an organiser’s guide, teacher’s manual, posters and sponsorship forms), plus they get to keep 20% of the money raised, to spend how they choose.
