A Games Legacy for Scotland

Youth Scotland is working with the Scottish Government to build effective partnerships with, and between young people to ensure they play their part in making decisions around the legacy.  

    

Building the Curriculum 4

This Scottish Government publication was launched on the 28th October, and is aimed at all those who support children and young people in developing skills for learning, life and work. 

 

Each month we will be bringing you news from Youth Scotland and its Scotland-wide network. This includes info on; 

  • resources and publications for youth workers
  • training and events for youth workers
  • activities and opportunities for young people
  • the latest funding opportunities

YOUTH SCOTLAND NEWS

On the Move - a national training event for young leaders

20th - 21st February 2010, Carronvale House, Stirlingshire

In February next year, Girls on the Move is running a residential training event over the course of a single weekend. Places are available to book now!

The event is aimed at young women, aged 16-25, who would like to develop their leadership skills in dance, sport or physical activity. A range of workshops and training sessions will be available, depending on level of experience. 

Successful applicants will be asked to pay a commitment fee of £20. All other costs are covered (excluding travel costs). To apply, fill in the booking form as soon as possible - places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

PPSS 2009

This year's Practical Problems Sensible Solutions training conference took place on the 31st October and 1st November at the Hilton Edinburgh Airport Hotel.

The event was attended by over 100 workers from across Scotland. Rory MacLeod, Head of the CLD Standards Council, delivered an insightful and inspiring speech and the event also saw the launch of the new Girls on the Move DVD and the toolkit 'Raising your game'.

One attendee commented that they would take back to their youth group "inspiration, knowledge and confidence in my new role," while another said; "An excellent day - very informative, a lovely venue and delicious lunch, and met some really nice people - thank you". Moving Forward Award

There is still time to apply, or nominate a young person you know, for the Girls on the Move Moving Forward Award. The award celebrates leaders, not just those who are naturally skilled in leadership but those who have been on the biggest journey since completing a leadership course. Applicants will be featured in a specially produced supplement and celebrated at the On the Move event in February, with a Sport Leaders UK Award presented to the individual who has shown the most progression. The closing date is the 31st December 2009.

Games Legacy for Scotland and Active Nation campaign launch

Youth Scotland is among the partner agencies working with the Scottish Government in creating and delivering a legacy for young people in the run up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

As part of the build up to the 2014 Commonwealth games, a campaign has been launched called Active Nation. The idea of the campaign is to encourage and support people across Scotland to take steps to become a bit more active. The website has information about active volunteering, as well as the chance to see how active you are and set your own active goals.

2008/09 Insurance for Affiliated Groups ends on 30th November

A reminder that the 2008/09 insurance year ends on the 30th November. Groups that have not returned their insurance forms by this date will not be insured following the 30th November. If you are still to return your form to us, or your Area Association, please do so as soon as possible.

An updated version of the Insurance Matters document and a brand new document, Membership Matters, have been produced and will be sent to you with your affiliation pack.

Rocking all over... Scotland!

John Nicolson, Area Coordinator for Falkirk is currently involved in running a youth rock bands project. He would like to let all groups know that they are always looking for opportunities to travel to areas outwith Falkirk to put on gigs and run workshops (guitar, drums etc) with other youth groups and projects. The impact of tobacco on young people: are they really informed?

ASH Scotland/ STCA Youth and Tobacco Conference - 25th March 2010, Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh

This conference is for those interested in and working with young people in a range of youth settings including youth work, education and health. Through presentations, practical and interactive workshops and networking opportunities, the conference aims to examine the breadth of tobacco issues, explore factors associated with the uptake of smoking by young people, identify common challenges and goals and demonstrate approaches and resources for delivering prevention activities.

YouthLink Scotland National Youth Worker of the Year Awards

Nominations are now open for the YouthLink Scotland National Youth Worker of the Year Awards, which will take place on Thursday 18th March 2010 at the Crowne Plaza, Glasgow. There are a number of different categories, and nominations can come from colleagues, line managers, partnership organisations or service users. Closing date is 22nd January 2010. Youth Commission on Alcohol online survey for 11-26 year olds

The Youth Commission on Alcohol have devised an online survey which aims to find out what other young people think about the issues around Scotland's relationship with alcohol. They need as many young people, aged 11 to 26, to complete it, and one lucky entrant will win a Nintendo Wii with Sports Pack. The info collected will help the Commissioners shape their recommendations to the Scottish Government.

Cinema in Scotland's rural communities

Regional Screen Scotland is the development agency for access to cinema-going opportunities - improving Moving Image access, participation and learning. They would like to hear from groups who are currently exhibiting films, or have ambitions to screen films. They want to know what support you really need, and what you are currently delivering.

'We keep it zipped' is a new campaign from NHS Health Scotland to re-assure young people that health services that are provided are confidential.

icould website supports young people's career decisions

icould is a new online resource from CRAC: The Career Development Organisation. It contains a nationwide collection of filmed career stories to inspire young people making career decisions by giving them an insight into the working lives of real people in real jobs. The resource is aimed at 14-19 year olds.

FUNDING NEWS

BBC Children in Need

Fundraising events have been taking place across the UK for Children in Need, but did you know that youth organisations are a priority to receive much of the money that is raised?

Youth Scotland is working closely with Children in Need Scotland to ensure groups are aware that their new small grants programme is designed specifically to help volunteer-led organisations, and can go towards general running costs, and activities and equipment costs in particular. So if you are looking for a small grant, Children in Need may be a good place to try. The next deadline is the 15th January 2010.

Lloyds TSB Foundation Petition

Following the recent announcement that the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland is suspending funding, the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) has set up a petition calling on the Prime Minister to step in. Sign the petition here.

CHANGEit Awards

CHANGEit is an awards scheme designed to recognise, support, reward and inspire 11-18 year olds throughout the UK who are volunteering, campaigning or taking action to create change in their local area. CHANGEit is offering training, support and cash prizes of up to £750 for finalists in 3 categories; Innovation, Performance and Photography. Closing date for nominations is 11th December.

Peter Vardy Charitable Fund

Peter Vardy, one of Scotland's leading car dealerships, has launched the Pater Vardy Charitable Fund (PVCF) with an initial £100,000 investment. The PVCF will consider funding applications that support underpriveleged young people in communities across Scotland where Peter Vardy runs dealerships - which is currently Motherwell, Perth, Kirkcaldy and Edinburgh. There will be 2 categories of funding - applications over £1,000 and ones for under £1,000.

Unlimited - celebrating arts, culture and sport by disabled and deaf people

Unlimited is a new UK-wide £1.5 million disability arts commissioning fund being run as part of the Londom 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The fund aims to commission work that is artistically led by deaf and disabled people. People's Millions website launched

The Big Lottery fund recently announced the launch of a brand new website for the popular People's Millions programme. The website includes interactive maps showing the projects that have been awarded funding in each area, case studies and daily announcements of the voting numbers for each of the day's shortlisted projects.
