YOUTH SCOTLAND NEWS Government Minister for Schools and Skills visits Falkirk summer activities project A summer activity programme for young people in Falkirk had a special visit last week when Keith Brown, Scottish Government Minister for Schools and Skills came to see first -hand the range of activities on offer and to meet the workers and young people involved. The programme of activities at the Falkirk Wheel is a partnership project between Youth Scotland and Falkirk Council, and is part-funded by the Cashback for Communities scheme. Youth Scotland would like to welcome Jennifer Scougall, Youth Scotland Awards Development Worker and Bridie Ashrowan as the new YouthBorders Manager. To be sent an application form, please email carol.downie@youthscotland.org.uk Girls on the Move - Funding and leadership courses Participation prorgramme - Funding for Groups: Grants of up to £2,000 are available for projects and initiatives across Scotland that increase physical activity levels among girls and young women. For further details, and how to apply, see the Participation section of the Girls on the Move website. The application deadline for the current round of Girls on the Move participation grants is the 1st September 2009. Future application deadlines are the 1st December 2009 and the 1st March 2010. Leadership courses: Girls on the Move continues to run highly popular leadership courses for young women aged 16-24. Forthcoming courses include a 5 day residential Award in Dance Leadership in Perthshire at the end of this month, a 5 day non-residential Award in Dance Leadership in Glasgow on the 12th - 16th October and a 1 day Active Clubs leadership course in November. YOUTH SCOTLAND EVENTS This year's Practical Problems Sensible Solutions conference will take place on the 31st October - 1st November at the Hilton Edinburgh Airport. This event offers part time and voluntary youth workers the chance to undertake quality training, develop new skills and share their experiences with other people delivering grass roots youth work. There are brand new workshop topics for 2009, and weekend and day delegate options available. Book your place now! BRAND NEW Involvement Training Stage 2 residential dates announced Involvement Training is a 3 stage process open to all youth workers interested in delivering the Involvement Training programme within their group. If you would like to find out more about Involvement Training, please visit the Involvement Training section of the Youth Scotland website. Those workers that have completed Youth Scotland Involvement Training tutor training (Stage 1) may be interested to know that new dates have now been announced for Stage 2 residentials. They are: 2nd - 4th October in Aviemore 16th - 18th October in Blairgowrie 20th - 22nd November in Castle Douglas To obtain a booking form, please email philip.ritchie@youthscotland.org.uk Awards Induction Training Day: 19th August 2009, Edinburgh Open to anyone interested in supporting young people to gain Youth Achievement or Dynamic Youth Awards, this training provides workers with a general understanding of the rationale behind the awards and how they can be used to complement their existing youth work practice. Cost: £50 per head for affiliated groups, £75 for non-affiliated. More information and how to book... Keep It Real Worker Training: 29th August, Aberdeenshire and 27th September, Dumfries Keep It Real is a resource pack to support young people's participation in planning youth work programmes. This one day training session supports youth and community workers to use the Keep It Real pack with young people, helping to increase their confidence, encourage them to get involved in decision making and demonstrate how young people's involvement can be accredited. NEW PILOT COURSE: Practical Skills for Conflict Resolution and Mediation: 18th & 19th September, Grangemouth A new, interactive course aimed at youth workers who wish to build their skills and confidence in dealing with conflict situations. This is a residential course running over one evening and one full day. This course is free of charge and is being run as a pilot. More information and how to book... FUNDING NEWS See below for a selection of the latest funding opportunities: BBC Children in Need Fun and Friendship: A new £3m grants programme focusing on disabled young people aged 12-18 years old. Deadline is 31st July. Voluntary Action Community Chest: Grants of up to £1,000 for smaller community groups and free training to groups with an annual income of under £25,000. Women's Fund for Scotland: Grants of up to £5,000 for International Women's Day events or for projects that benefit women aged 16 or over run by not-for-profit groups. UnLtd Sport Relief Awards: Individuals or groups can apply for awards of between £250 and £10,000 for projects using sport and recreation to bring people together in communities. This fund will be open for new applications as of the 24th July. Buchanan Galleries Community Bursary: A £10,000 fund to help community groups in West Central Scotland. Girls on the Move: Grants of up to £2,000 for projects and initiatives across Scotland that aim to increase physical activity levels among girls and young women. Cashback for Communities: Grants of up to £10,000 for local youth projects. Administered by YouthLink Scotland. Young Scot Arts Action Fund: Grants of up to £200 for individuals and £750 for groups to fund creative talents. Charity Technology Exchange: Organisations registered as charities can apply for product donations from companies such as Microsoft, Symantec and Cisco. Admin fees apply. Big Lottery Secret Millionaire Fund: The Big Lottery Fund, in partnership with Channel 4, has funding for community projects. Applicants can apply directly or nominate a local group. The Prince's Trust Community Cash Awards: Funding for individuals to set up a project to benefit the community. The Princes Trust Development Awards: Grants to help young people get into education, training or employment. Awards for All Scotland: Grants of up to £10,000 for local community based projects. 2014 Communities : Big Lottery Fund grants of up to £1,000 for local sports clubs, voluntary and community groups, community councils and schools. Investing in Ideas: Grants of £500 to £10,000 for ideas that could benefit the local community. Laidlaw Youth Trust - Closure It has recently been announced that the Laidlaw Youth Trust has applied to Scotland's watchdog charities to dissolve itself. It is therefore no longer open for applications. SNIPPETS UK Youth Conference: Girls work - under threat or a new dawn? UK Youth is currently celebrating 100 years of working with girls and young women. This 1 day conference will include presentations, workshops delivered by practitioners experienced in working with young women and group work to draw lessons from the past and present practice. The conference takes place on Tuesday 8th September at Hinsley Hall in Leeds and costs £95 per person. Get more information here. Shell LiveWIRE Entrepeneur of the Year Award 2009 The prestigious Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepeneur of the Year Award is now open for entries. The award offers budding entrepeneurs aged 16-30 the opportunity to receive a cash injection of £10,000 for their business. Applications are invited from across the UK. Young Scottish Minority Ethnic Awards 2009 The Awards aim to acknowledge, encourage, reward and promote the positive achievements of young Scots from minority backgrounds aged between 14 and 28 years old. Anyone can send in nominations for someone who has inspired others or worked exceptionally hard to achieve success. Closing date is the end of August and the Awards ceremony will take place in Glasgow in September. Go to the website. LBGT Youth Scotland text support service LGBT Youth Scotland have now launched a brand new National Text Support Service, providing information, advice and support directly to young people's mobile phones. BTCV Sustainable Communities Mentorship Programme British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) is offering training and support to individuals who want to inspire their own communities to take action on sustainability and climate change. The programme begins with a series of FREE 2-day training workshops, with the first taking place in Glasgow on the 3rd and 4th September. BTCV is a registered Youth Achievement Award Operating Agency and participation in the mentorship programme can be accredited through the Awards. Cirdan Sailing Trust - Voyages for youth groups The Cirdan Sailing Trust specialises in enabling groups of young people, particularly those who are socially, physically or mentally disadvantaged, to experience the challenge and adventure of life at sea on large sailing vessels. The Trust runs a number of voyages across the UK, and provides assistance for groups unable to cover the cost of a voyage, through their Voyage of Discovery Fund. Job Vacancy: Youth Music Officer (Formal Sector) The Scottish Arts Council currently has a vacancy for a Youth Music Officer as part of its Youth Music Initiative. Teenage Cancer Trust '2009 Teenagers' Campaign Teenage Cancer Trust is inviting youth workers to get involved in their 2009 Teenagers campaign to help encourage young people across Scotland to raise £50 each to help their peers who have been diagnosed with cancer. Young people can register here or logo onto www.2009teenagers.co.uk for fundraising ideas, success stories and other useful information. The trust's goal is to raise over £200,000 to help young people diagnosed with Cancer in Scotland. For more information about Teenage Cancer Trust visit their website. Free SNAPY alcohol awareness training and regional forums The Scottish Network of Alcohol Practitioners for the Young (SNAPY) are holding free regional forums across Scotland from August to November. The day-long sessions will include alcohol awareness training for those who work with children and young people, discussions and feedback on key issues for children and young people in your area and information about how your service could benefit from the SNAPY network.
