The second edition of Amazing Things has now been released by the Awards Network, with the support of SQA.

This updated publication provides a summary of 21 awards available across Scotland to recognise, value and/or accredit the achievements of young people aged 12 - 25 through youth work approaches.

Seen the new Girls on the Move DVD?

Girls on the Move, the project designed to increase physical activity levels among girls and young women in Scotland, recently launched a brand new promotional DVD, highlighting the expectations, experiences and hopes of the young women that have been involved in the Leadership programme. A useful tool to show to groups or individuals who are thinking of coming on a Leadership course...

New Year Newsletters

The New Year editions of Magnet, Would You Credit It and the Girls on the Move newsletters are hot off the press.

The New Year edition of Magnet is accompanied by the 'Progression Routes for Young Leaders' information supplement, a quick guide to progression routes for those who are engaged with Youth Scotland programmes.

All newsletters will be sent to you via a separate email next week - so keep a look out for them! Affiliated groups - look out for your hard copies in the post.

Have you affiliated to Youth Scotland?

Remember, groups that are affiliated to Youth Scotland have access to a wide range of benefits including;

  •  a specialist insurance package 
  •  support with child protection policies and disclosure applications 
  •  free or discounted training 
  •  youth work publications and mailings.

Please note: For groups that have not yet re-affiliated to Youth Scotland, the newsletter that you receive through the post in January will be the last mailing sent to you. If you have not renewed your affiliation/ insurance package, and do not have insurance from another provider, you are not insured as of the 1st December 2009.

NO MESSIN' deadline - 12th February 2010

Network Rail's NO MESSIN' programme invites youth groups across the UK to come up with their own ideas about how to tackle issues that make them feel unsafe in their own communities.

There is now just under a month left to get proposals in for the No Messin' programme, with the chance to win £200 and attend an all expenses paid residential with other groups from England, Scotland and Wales. Get involved!

On the Move training event seeks young female leaders  

Do you know of any young women, aged between 16-25, that have completed a Girls on the Move Leadership course OR have some experience of leading groups?

On the Move, the Girls on the Move national training event, has a number of spaces available at Intermediate Level for young women looking to develop their leadership skills in dance, sport or physical activity. They will have the opportunity to attend four workshops over the course of a weekend, with session choices ranging from choreography and bellydancing to managing behaviour in groups and working with those with special needs. A commitment fee of £20 is required.

On the Move is taking place on 20th - 21st February at Carronvale House, Stirlingshire, FK5 3LH.

Nominations open for the Young Scot Awards 2010

The nominations for the Young Scot Awards 2010, run in partnership with the Sunday Mail, are now open. The Awards recognise and celebrate the amazing things young people are doing everyday across Scotland. There are 13 categories inclduing Sport, the Arts, Volunteering, Community and much more. The winners will be announced at a glitzy ceremony held in the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on Thursday 29th April 2010.

If you know a young person who you think deserves to be recognised, then please log on to www.youngscotawards.co.uk to make your nomination. Closing date is Friday 26th February 2010. 

Channel 4's 'Unstaged' photo competition invites entries from young people in Scotland

Blipfoto (an online photography-sharing network) has teamed up with Channel 4 and the National Theatre of Scotland to run three photography competitions, all aimed at exposing the extraordinary in the everyday.

Each competition has categories for over and under 18s, with cash prizes and photo gear for the winners, plus dozens of full Blipfoto memberships for the runners-up.

The theme of the first competition is 'Performance and Play in Scotland'. Entrants must upload 5 photographs that say something bold, fresh and different about the given theme, before the 12th February 2010.

Physical Activity and Health Alliance (PAHA) Conference 2010 - 'Getting the Message Across'

This year's PAHA conference will take place at the Edinburgh Conference Centre at Heriot Watt University on Thursday 25th February. It aims to inspire, motivate and bring alive some of the latest developments in the Physical Activity and Health agenda in Scotland.

PAHA Active Factor Awards

To be celebrated for the first time at the PAHA conference mentioned above, the newly launched PAHA Awards Scheme recognises projects, teams, organisations or individuals demonstrating excellence in the promotion of physical activity and health. Nominations close on the 22nd January.

Prince's Trust 'Get Started in Presenting' programme

The 'Get Started in Presenting' programme is for young people aged 16-25 who are not currently in education, training or employment and who want to get their lives moving in a positive direction towards further training, education, volunteering or employment.

This 5 week programme is delivered by The Prince's Trust Scotland, in partnership with the Glasgow Media and Access Centre (GMAC). It aims to develop young people's presenting skills through devising new media, and at the same time increase communication skills, develop team work skills and boost confidence levels.

Scottish Government Anti-Bullying Consultation Paper

The Scottish Government has published a consultation paper that sets out a draft national approach to anti-bullying in Scotland. This paper proposes an approach to anti-bullying in Scotland for children and young people; outlines contributions to this approach by sectors and stakeholders nationally and highlights the role of the Scottish Anti-Bullying Steering Group (SABS).

Scottish Natural Heritage's Sharing Good Practice Event - 10th February 2010, The Tolbooth, Stirling

This event, organised by Scottish Natural Heritage in association with Community Development Alliance Scotland and the Sustainable Development Education Network, is aimed at professionals in community learning and development and/or education for sustainability. The aim of the event is to share best practice and examine how the work of these two sectors can mutually reinforce each other in unlocking the potential of communities to link local action to global issues.

Middle East Youth Festival: 25th February - 3rd March 2010, Edinburgh

This spring the Global Citizens Corps youth project is hosting Edinburgh's first Middle East Youth Festival. The festival will engage local young people and be delivered and planned by youth from Jordan, Lebanon, USA, Iraq and the UK. Young people are welcome at all events, and the Global Citizens Corp are also looking for young people who would like to be involved as part of the UK team.

Glasgow Youth Film Festival 2010 - call for young people to make one minute movies

The Glasgow Youth Film Festival, which takes place from the 7th - 15th February, is calling for entries for the One-Minute Filmmaking Competition for young people. The competition is open to young people aged 14-19 years, as individuals or in groups, from across the whole of Scotland. Prizes include an IPOD Touch, film-making software and FOPP vouchers.

VACANCY: NHS Health Scotland Health Improvement Programme Manager - Young People

NHS Health Scotland is currently recruiting for a Health Improvement Manager - Young People (Acting Up/ Secondment for up to 1 year maternity cover). Salary £37,996 - £45,596 per annum. Job application deadline is 5pm, 22nd January 2010.

Make a Splash! small grants available

The Scottish Community Foundation, on behalf of Voluntary Arts Scotland, is administering a new grants programme called Make a Splash! Grants of £250 to £2,000 are available to small, voluntary run groups that want to try something new, to help more people discover how good it feels to take part in arts and crafts activity.

Make a Splash! is part of a wider programme of activity called People Making Waves, which aims to connect people to the spirit and values of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games through volunteering and being active within their own community.

UnLtd Sport Relief Funding - Deadline for DO IT Awards

'Do It' is a new Award from UnLtd Sport Relief Awards (funded by Comic Relief) aimed at young people aged 18-21 years, which is given directly to young people to support them  to run their own project.

Do It Awards are made every 3 months.

Stations Community Regeneration Fund

Transport Scotland and ScotRail have launched a £1m Scotland-wide scheme to make use of disused railway station buildings. This scheme aims to develop a community project which contributes to the local community or a business that meets passenger needs. If you have an idea that would make use of a disused station building you can apply for funding for a contribution towards set-up costs.
