The report, produced by Youthlink Scotland in partnership with a range of agencies, is a summary of the survey of the hopes, fears and aspirations of over 2,000 young people aged 11-25. Please feel free to forward this bulletin to anyone who may find it of interest. --------------------------------------------------- YOUTH SCOTLAND NEWS Bike Club comes to Scotland Youth Scotland is excited to be involved in Bike Club, an innovative new project to create new cycling clubs and activities for children and young people across the UK. Funded in Scotland by the ASDA Foundation, Bike Club is being delivered by a partnership of CTC, Youth Scotland and ContinYou. The first stage of this project includes the recruitment of two Bike Club Development Officers – one to be based in Glasgow and one based in Edinburgh with a national remit. The recruitment process is currently underway - we will let you know more as soon as the new posts are in position. So whether the young people you work with are keen cyclists or inexperienced on a bike, the range of opportunities Bike Club will offer may be just up their street (or bike path!). Job Vacancy: Youth Work and Schools Development Manager We are currently seeking a Development Manager to lead on an exciting partnership initiative between Youth Scotland, Learning and Teaching Scotland and Scottish Government. The successful candidate will join Youth Scotland’s Dynamic Youth and Youth Achievement Awards Team to identify and share good practice models of youth work and school collaboration. The post holder will also deliver high quality training to teaching and youth work staff to support them in delivering the Awards. The closing date for applications is 15 April at 12.00 noon, and interviews will be held in Edinburgh on Wednesday 28 April 2010. Click here for more information and the job pack . Racing driver and president of UK Youth, Nigel Mansell, is getting on his bike to promote Bike Club this summer, and is looking for clubs and groups to visitin the last week of July and the first week of August. Health Minister Shona Robison meeets young leaders at Girls on the Move event Shona Robison MSP, Minister for Public Health and Sport, provided the keynote speech at this year’s Girls on the Move national training event, On the Move, which took place in February at Carronvale House, Stirlingshire. Celebrating Young Leaders Girls on the Move has recently produced a special information supplement in partnership with Sports Leaders UK. The supplement, ‘Celebrating Young Leaders’, includes case studies of the recipients of this year’s Moving Forward Award as well as information about the range of Girls on the Move Leadership courses on offer and how to get involved.

Youth Scotland has been asked by the CLD Standards Council to carry out a consultation to hear and learn directly from youth work volunteers about the skills and knowledge they feel they need to carry out their role. So if you are an active youth work volunteer – now is the time to make your voice heard. If you haven't already done so, please fill in this short online survey . CEOP Report Button on Youth Scotland website The Youth Scotland website has recently been registered with the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre, and given authorisation to display the CEOP Report button. When clicked on, the CEOP button will take users directly to the CEOP website, where they can report inappropriate contact online and get help, support and advice from experienced professionals. For further information about CEOP and particularly its resources for young people and those working with young people, log on to the thinkuknow website . Scottish projects to take part in No Messin’ programme residential Well done to everyone who submitted a proposal for the No Messin’ Programme, powered by Network Rail. The following projects from Scotland have been selected to participate; The ‘Heads Up’ Project from Dumbarton, Castlemilk Youth Complex, the South Queensferry and Roseberry Hall CE Centre, Kilbirnie Youth Action Group, Findhorn Youth Club and Dalmuir Youth Action Group. These projects will join other teams from England and Wales on an all expenses paid residential in April at Avon Tyrell, UK Youth’s activity centre in the New Forest, Hampshire. Youth Scotland ‘very high’ compliance with CRBS Youth Scotland recently underwent a Compliance Visit from CRBS, the Central Registered Body in Scotland that provides Disclosures for volunteers in the voluntary sector working with children, young people and adults at risk. Youth Scotland is pleased to report that the organisation's overall level of compliance and following of set procedures was rated "very high". Youth Scotland supports a number of clubs and groups to access the Disclosure system. Groups will be notified shortly of updated procedures that we hope will help to further aid this process. Active Nation launched On 1st March 2010, the Scottish Government launched Active Nation, an initiative designed to motivate Scots to increase their physical activity in the run up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games and beyond. The Active Nation website has tips for getting started, events and activities to join in and volunteering opportunities. Youth Scotland is contributing to the lasting legacy of the commonwealth games through project such as Girls on the Move, Take the Lead, Bike Club and much more. If your group has an activity or expertise it would like to share, send details to meg.watson@youthscotland.org.uk ‘Just Ask’ campaign highlights Additional Support for Learning for young people The Scottish Government has launched a campaign to raise awareness of Additional Support for Learning (ASL) amongst parents and those working with young people. The campaign is particularly keen to highlight ASL to youth workers, who may also be in a position to signpost the help that is available. For more information, please visit www.infoscotland.com/justask or email kirsty.cameron@leith.co.uk Resources Update Youth Scotland has been working on a number of new resource packs for youth workers and young people in 2010… Bored Meetings? has had a make-over Bored Meetings?, the popular resource pack for supporting meeting skills for young decision makers, has had a make-over for 2010! With updated content and some added extras, the new pack is fresh, funky and easy to use. Including a variety of resources and activities to support workers and young people to improve group decision-making skills, this is a must for effective youth participation. The new Bored Meetings pack costs £18 (£13 for Youth Scotland affiliated groups) and will be available shortly. Order yours in advance using the current resources order form. Hot off the press! Safe in my Place Developed with the support of Network Rail, Safe in My Place is aimed at helping youth workers introduce themed work on the subject of Community Safety. This brand new toolkit is available for £12 (or a mere £5 for Youth Scotland affiliated groups.) The pack includes themed statements on Crime and the Law, Bullying and Gangs, Travel and Transport, Things to do/Places to go and Press and CCTV, to encourage group discussion and provide the opportunity to address misconceptions. The pack is a great tool to get discussion going, as well as introducing the theme of Community Safety in youth work settings. Order Safe in My Place using the Resources Order form. Artsmart toolkit UK Youth, Youth Scotland’s English Partner, has this week launched ArtSmart, a new toolkit for developing the arts in youth groups. This toolkit is bursting with practical ideas, session plans and recording sheets to enable youth groups to accredit an Arts Based approach through the Youth Achievement Awards. Youth Scotland is hoping to launch a Scottish version of this toolkit in the very near future but if you want a preview of the English toolkit, please click here . OTHER NEWS A right blether Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People (SCCYP) are hosting several events to launch their national consultation. The project will raise awareness of children’s rights whilst listening to the views of children and young people across Scotland. Come along to one of the events in March to explore how young people can become involved in shaping the Commissioner’s policy priority areas. Making Our Mark - YouthLink Scotland National Conference & Awards Dinner 2010 The YouthLink Scotland National Conference and Youth Worker of the Year Awards 2010 will take place on Thursday 18th March at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow. Places are available to book now. The main conference speaker this year will be Dr Harry Burns, Chief Medical Officer. The Being Young in Scotland 2009 debate, being held in the afternoon, will be chaired by Glen Campbell, Scottish news and current affairs broadcaster. NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES... O2 launches ‘Think Big’ funding for young people Mobile phone company O2 yesterday launched a £5m programme which will award cash-in-hand grants for young people to make a difference in their local communities. ‘Think Big’ gives 13-25 year olds the opportunity to obtain a £300 grant to fund projects aimed at addressing local issues, and replaces O2’s former ‘It’s Your Community’ funding programme. Projects that are successful may also be eligible for a further grant of £2,500, and the programme will also provide training and support, working with O2 volunteers and a range of youth organisations. The programme is being delivered in partnership with the National Youth Agency and UK Youth. Youth Scotland is looking forward to working with UK Youth to deliver the ‘Think Big’ programme in Scotland. For more details, visit the 02 Think Big website. Santander Foundation The Santander Foundation funds local, regional and national charities for their work within the UK. All funding must directly help disadvantaged people through one or both of the charitable priorities - education and training, or financial capability. All funding is for one off donations. Click here. ‘see me’ £10K small grants scheme – deadline 12th March ‘see me' - Scotland's national campaign to end stigma and discrimination around mental ill-health - has launched a new Small Grants Scheme and is calling on the people of Tayside, Lanarkshire, Shetland and Orkney to get involved. The ‘see me' Small Grants Scheme is awarding up to £5,000 to local groups in the health board areas mentioned above, who can come up with fresh, innovative and exciting ideas to tackle stigma and discrimination associated with mental health. Closing date is Friday 12th March 2010. More info? Click here . Young Roots Young Roots is a grants programme designed to engage young people aged 13-25 with their heritage. Young Roots projects stem directly from the interest and ideas of young people, who are supported by youth and heritage organisations to develop skills, build confidence, and connect with their local communities. Grants of £3,000 to £25,000 are available. More info? Click here. OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE Co-operative Film Festival Are you in touch with budding film-makers? The Co-operative Film Festival gives young people aged 19 and under the chance to have their short films shown on the big screen at the prestigious Co-operative Film Festival, to be held at the National Media Museum in Bradford. Edinburgh Zoo Wild Days Out - Saturday 12th June The ‘Wild Days Out’ offers youth organisations the chance to visit the zoo for reduced admission prices and learn all about Biodiversity (the variety of living things). The day will include animal handling, activities, quizzes, arts and crafts, along with an interactive 1 hour 'Discovery' session with an Education Officer for each group. Sailing opportunities for youth groups with SailLaser, Scotland Based in Strathclyde Country Park, SailLaser Scotland provides a range of different types of sailing lessons for all ages, from 5 years to adult. Sailing sessions can be run as a 2½ hour taster to a 6 weeks training programmes, for youth groups of up to 35 people. Prices start from £14.10 inc VAT per young person, and groups may be able to source funding through the Big Lottery Fund . More info? Freerunning (also known as parkour) was made famous during the opening scene of the James Bond movie Casino Royale. Know the Score is offering young people a chance to see a demonstration of this unique activity and be trained by two of Scotland's premier coaches. Events are taking place in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dumfries, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen and Inverness. There are only 30 places per location, so reserve quickly to avoid dissapointment! More info? Click here.
