YOUTH SCOTLAND NEWS Youth Scotland and respectme promote anti-bullying week National Anti-Bullying Week takes place across the UK and Ireland from 16th -20th November 2009. This year Youth Scotland is working in partnership with respectme, Scotland’s anti-bullying service, to encourage and support young people’s anti-bullying campaigning at a local level. This includes a project involving five Youth Scotland affiliated groups from Edinburgh, Glasgow, the Borders, Shetland and Stirling, who are each being awarded £1,000 each by respectme to promote Anti-Bullying Week in their local area. If this year’s project is successful, there may be scope for rolling it out to more groups next year. We have also recently posted anti-bullying information and resources to all affiliated groups. As part of Anti-Bullying Week, respectme is also organising a competition in schools and youth groups across Scotland and is hosting Scotland’s third national anti-bullying conference in Glasgow on 17th November. Girls on the Move featured in BBC Sport video Girls on the Move recently made an appearance at the BBC Sport 'Your Game' event on Glasgow Green, on the 5th August. The Girls on the Move programme, designed to increase physical activity levels among girls and young women in Scotland, fitted in well with the football, music and cultural tournament activities taking place throughout the day. The project even ended up on camera and featured on the BBC Sport website! To watch the video with all the action from the day, follow this link... Congratulations to Pauline Vallance from Paisley, winner of the recent Health Information supplement competition. Pauline won a place on NHS Health Scotland's Creative Imaginative Learning Course in September. YOUTH SCOTLAND EVENTS 10% Early Bird Offer for PPSS ends 1st September Practical Problems Sensible Solutions, Youth Scotland's national training event for youth workers is taking place on Saturday 31st October - Sunday 1st November at the Hilton Edinburgh Airport. A 10% early bird discount is available for those booking before 1st Sept - go directly to the website to fill in a booking form. This event is open to anyone who interested in developing their skills as a youth worker, and includes a choice of 17 workshops topics, a marketplace with free information and resources to take away and the opportunity to network with workers from across Scotland. Youth Scotland AGM - 21st November, Edinburgh This year, Youth Scotland will be holding its Annual General Meeting on the 21st November at the Hilton Edinburgh Airport Hotel. Further details will be circulated to all affiliated groups in September. Final FREE places available for Practical Skills for Conflict Resolution and Mediation training, 18th & 19th September, Grangemouth There are still a few free places available for this new, interactive course aimed at youth workers who wish to build their skills and confidence in dealing with conflict situations. IMPORTANT notice on current Cashback for Communities round of funding YouthLink Scotland is urging all groups considering applying for the 3rd round of Cashback for Communities Funding to apply AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The closing date is 31st October but the quicker grant requests come in, the quicker they can be assessed and monies disbursed. Applications from groups that were previously unsuccessful are eligible, as well as new applications. See the Cashback page of the YouthLink website for the application form. Evaluation Support Scotland - Updated Guides Evaluation Support Scotland has recently updated their downloadable support guides. These can be useful resources for guidance in both the application and evaluation processes. View the catalogue of support guides here. See below for a selection of the latest funding opportunities: Girls on the Move: Grants of up to £2,000 for projects and initiatives across Scotland that aim to increase physical activity levels among girls and young women. Deadlines are 1st Sept 09, 1st Dec 09 and 1st March 2010. Go Play Fund: A Scottish Government funding stream to improve play opportunities among 5-13 year olds. Open for applications after 18th September. UnLtd Sport Relief Awards: Individuals or groups can apply for awards of between £250 and £10,000 for projects using sport and recreation to bring people together in communities. Cashback for Communities: Grants of up to £10,000 for local youth projects. Administered by YouthLink Scotland. Voluntary Action Community Chest: Grants of up to £1,000 for smaller community groups and free training to groups with an annual income of under £25,000. Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards: Grants now open for elderly people and adults and children with disabilities. Community and voluntary groups can apply for grants of between £500 and £4,000. Women's Fund for Scotland: Grants of up to £5,000 for International Women's Day events or for projects that benefit women aged 16 or over run by not-for-profit groups. Young Scot Arts Action Fund: Grants of up to £200 for individuals and £750 for groups to fund creative talents. Charity Technology Exchange: Organisations registered as charities can apply for product donations from companies such as Microsoft, Symantec and Cisco. Admin fees apply. Big Lottery Secret Millionaire Fund: The Big Lottery Fund, in partnership with Channel 4, has funding for community projects. Applicants can apply directly or nominate a local group. The Prince's Trust Community Cash Awards: Funding for individuals to set up a project to benefit the community. The Princes Trust Development Awards: Grants to help young people get into education, training or employment. Awards for All Scotland: Grants of up to £10,000 for local community based projects. 2014 Communities : Big Lottery Fund grants of up to £1,000 for local sports clubs, voluntary and community groups, community councils and schools. Investing in Ideas: Grants of £500 to £10,000 for ideas that could benefit the local community. SNIPPETS Drinkaware Ultimate Day competition Drinkaware have launched 'The Ultimate Day' competition, which will give 5 teenagers - and up to three of their friends - the chance to win their dream day out. The competition challenges young people to creatively demonstrate how they can have fun without alcohol. Entrants are asked to upload a video or image to their website that brings to life what their dream day might look like. The competition is open to anyone aged 16-17 year olds, but weekly prizes are also available to 13-15 year olds. Closing date for entries is 31 August. See the website for more info. Confidence and Well-being in Motion Physical Activity Event in Glasgow - 2nd September, Glasgow This free afternoon event is open to anyone interested in the topic of confidence and well-being, with speakers outlining academic evidence showing the importance of physical activity and highlighting 'green excercise'. Supporting Voluntary Action Think Tanks The Think Tanks project has been established as part of the Supporting Voluntary Action Programme, to develop a shared vision, purpose and direction for the voluntary sector support infrastructure in Scotland. The Think Tanks website includes information about discussions taking place within the Local Infrastructure Think Tank, which include senior staff from Volunteer Centres (VC) and Councils for Voluntary Service (CVS) across Scotland, which you may find of interest.
